Zvi Galil came to town to speak and we were able to grab a meal with him at One Market in San Francisco this evening. There is nothing like seeing friends from Columbia University — where I worked for a number of years before moving West — and sharing some memories and laughs. By the time Zvi was photographed at One Market he had been wined and hors d’oeuvred at the Presidio by the folks hosting the Columbia group. That didn’t stop him from grazing at this meal; Zvi has an appetite second only to my mother. We enjoyed the food and the service was swell, but I was too engaged in social activities to take notes.

Don’t drink and drive
Matthew and I grabbed two iced lowfat decaf lattes from the drive-thru Starbucks on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito this afternoon. They were pretty good. Pretty good up until Matthew’s defective plastic cup collapsed and sent drink and ice cubes south. We drove home wet with a lake of milk and coffee in the change cup between us. Since Matt couldn’t reach the whole spill during clean-up, I’m sure this will be a gift that will keep on giving. I’m thankful there was no sugar involved.
Valentine’s Day, Married-style
This is what I have planned for V-day this year: surf & turf. I’m not sure how I’ll prepare the lobster tails — most likely some sauté pan action and then butter and lemon. The oh-so-flavorful ribeyes will be done in a grill pan. Salt and pepper. That’s it. I can’t haul out the Weber so the grill pan will have to do. Add twice-baked spuds and some spring mix and we’re there. Hope he likes the iPod. Hope he doesn’t look at the website today. Hope his coworkers do and laugh their asses off. Oh, one more thing: please don’t rag on me about the feedlot beef. My back is still bothering me and one-stop shopping at Costco was, to quote an excellent episode of The Twilight Zone, “what was needed.”
Albany High’s Winter ball
Albany High School (Cali, not NY) had its annual Winter Ball this evening. Check Matthew and Jon out right before the affair! Once they left we snacked out on a bunch of goodies from Trader Joe’s, including chicken liver pate and spinach dip. I also threw together a dip with equal parts mayonnaise, shredded parmesan, sour cream, cream cheese and crab meat. This mass goes into a buttered casserole and is baked until browned and bubbly, at which point you are moments away from saturated fat nirvana. We watched several episodes of the 1960’s TV show Naked City while we ate, which has great location shots of New York City.
Birthday for Oma
It’s my Mom’s 68th birthday celebration today, so es gibt decadence cake with a boatload of candles. The actual birthday was the 18th, but we always do it up on the weekend so we can relax and take our time. Decadence cake has only a few ingredients, like chocolate, heavy cream and butter, so it’s dense. It’s more or less like eating a solid slab of ganache. Both Andronico’s and Whole Foods carry an excellent chocolate decadence cake that will feed a good ten people for about $25. They also have a smaller one but we don’t bother with that since we want another slice later in the day. If and when they open a Carvel in these parts we’ll go back to having ice cream cakes for birthdays.
